What is Hyperspermia

What is Hyperspermia

Table of Contents

Hyperspermia is a medical condition where men tend to produce a larger quantity of sperm, than the normal volume during ejaculation. The normal range of semen released per ejaculation is between 2 to 6 ml, however, when it is beyond 6.3 ml it is considered hyperspermia.

The frequency of occurrence is very rare, and only about 4% of the men in India have this condition. Although this doesn’t affect a man’s health, this has a chance of lowering fertility. This blog will help you understand hypospermia in detail.

Types of Hyperspermia

Hyperspermia is classified into two types— Primary Hyperspermia and Secondary Hyperspermia, based on the occurrence.

  • Primary Hyperspermia occurs naturally without any underlying causes. It often occurs due to inherent variations in the reproductive system.
  • On the other hand, Secondary Hyperspermia occurs due to numerous factors and health conditions such as inflammation, infection, or hormonal imbalances.

Causes of Hyperspermia

  • Genetic predisposition could be the underlying cause of the higher semen production.
  • Hormonal imbalances that happen especially with the production of testosterone could influence the higher sperm production, leading to hyperspermia.
  • Prostate conditions such as inflammation or infection in the prostate gland, could be an underlying cause for the increase in semen volume
  • Sexual abstinence is when a man has extended periods of refraining from ejaculation could lead to increased sperm volume.
  • Lifestyle factors such as poor diet, exercise, and overall well-being play a significant role in the release of excessive semen.
  • Drug usage particularly steroids and hormonal medications could interfere with the production of sperm, leading to hyperspermia.

Symptoms of Hyperspermia

  • Delay in ejaculation due to thicker sperm consistency.
  • Increased volume of semen than usual.
  • Pain during ejaculation.(sperm cramps)
  • Fatigue and dizziness after intercourse.
  • Higher sexual drive.
  • Stretchiness of the penis.
  • Yellow-coloured sperm discharge.

Does Hyperspermia Affect Fertility?

Yes, hyperspermia does affect male fertility by lowering sperm quality and causing fertility challenges. While this condition releases a large amount of sperm, it often dilutes the sperm concentration. The diluted sperm could hinder the ability to reach or fertilise the female egg effectively, thus leading to fertility problems.

Right Time to Consult A Doctor

Since hyperspermia doesn’t affect a man’s health, the choice of reaching out to a doctor is not timely. However, you should consult a doctor or medical service provider, if you are worried about producing large quantities of semen or planning for a pregnancy for a prolonged period of more than one year, without any success rates.

Diagnosis of Hyperspermia

When reaching out for a doctor’s help, your doctor will conduct a physical examination along with some medical tests such as semen analysis, hormonal tests, and ultrasound scansLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Semen Analysis

Semen samples of the man with hyperspermia are collected in a cup and sent for laboratory tests to evaluate the sperm count, movement, morphology, and quality of the sperm. This gives a clear picture of the concentration of semen, and the sperm’s ability to fertilize eggs.

Hormone Test

Blood samples can be collected to check for hormonal imbalances, particularly to measure the testosterone levels and the functionality of other male hormones, that influence male fertility.

Ultrasound Imaging

An ultrasound scan of the testicles and other parts of the reproductive system is evaluated to check for underlying problems that cause hyperspermia and infertility.

Treatment for Hyperspermia

Hyperspermia doesn’t always require any treatments if it doesn’t affect your fertility or affecting your overall health. However, if you are worried about high sperm count, quality and fertility, you can seek medical attention. The treatment of hyperspermia varies based on the underlying cause, and the treatment options include,

Medications

If the condition is caused due to infection or prostate-related or hormonal issues, medications such as antibiotics and hormonal medicines can be prescribed to treat the underlying cause and control the sperm count.

Lifestyle Changes

Engaging in regular exercises, following a balanced diet, avoiding long abstinence, reducing sexual activity and managing stress can sometimes help in normalizing semen volume. Consuming foods that are rich in zinc and antioxidants, could improve the quality of sperm, and improve the chances of pregnancy.

ART

In the case of planning for pregnancy, Artificial reproductive techniques such as IVF and ICSI can help aid conception despite hyperspermia. In this process, the sperm is retrieved from the body and fused with your partner’s egg. The fertilized embryo is then placed into your partner’s uterus in a procedure called embryo transfer, resulting in a successful pregnancy.

Surgery

In rare cases, hyperspermia could be caused due to the structural issues of the prostate. If the underlying cause is related to the structural issues, surgery can be done to keep the prostate in the correct shape, to control the semen volume.

Conclusion

Hyperspermia is a rare medical condition that is characterized by abundant sperm released during ejaculation. Only a few men experience this condition, and most of the time the underlying causes are unknown. Although it is harmless, there are chances of diluted semen concentration causing fertility issues. It needs medical attention, especially for those planning for pregnancy, and it can be easily treated without any major complications.

FAQs

Is Hyperspermia a serious medical condition?

No, hyperspermia itself is not a serious medical condition, as it is often a natural variation in semen volume. However, if it is associated with an underlying cause, it needs medical attention and treatment.

Are there any natural remedies for hyperspermia?

There are no proven natural remedies for hyperspermia, but it is often recommended to consume zinc and fiber-rich foods to improve semen concentration. It is better to consult a healthcare provider for help, as the exact underlying cause is unknown.

Is hyperspermia common?

No, hyperspermia is rare compared to other reproductive issues, where only 4% of the men in India have this condition.
